Belgische Federatie voor Ambulante Psychiatrie vzw
For Community Mental Health in Belgium

BFAP Membership

Ambulatory psychiatry in Belgium is under structural pressure. European and international mental health care policy frameworks are based on prevention-oriented cooperation, in which healthcare professionals play a central role in governance, alongside patients and their caregivers (European Commission, WHO Europe).

In Belgium, this governance is lacking for outpatient psychiatry, with BFAP making this level of care structurally visible. Membership is not a formality, but necessary to sustainably anchor outpatient psychiatry in policy and at the same time contribute to more care in the living environment, better accessibility, quality and more coherence within the Belgian mental health care landscape.

Objectives 🎯

  • An independent voice for ambulatory psychiatry: BFAP ensures that clinical reality, including evidence-based psychotherapy for complex care, is structurally translated into appropriate policy.
  • Socialisation of care, in dialogue with other mental health care actors: BFAP contributes to a coherent care continuum, tailored to contemporary care needs and scientific knowledge, through sustainable cooperation with primary care, crisis care, residential psychiatry and patient organisations
  • From practice to policy with impact: BFAP bundles signals and data from the field into substantiated and supported positions, so that members together have more policy-making power.
